IOTA 2 - Efficient Performance

What is your cross country dream? To manage your first 200 kms? To land in front of your house after a long day’s flying, or just set off and see how far you can get? The IOTA 2 offers you all of the most important ingredients for these achievements: efficient performance and relaxed piloting in all conditions. The latest technology gives the wing an outstanding polar curve for its class.

  • Balanced Strength

In terms of performance together with safety the die IOTA series is the most balanced of the ADVANCE glider selection. The IOTA 2 is especially impressive in accelerated flight with its outstanding glide, high degree of turbulence absorption and manageable extreme flight characteristics. Concern-free accelerated flying becomes the rule, with no exception – not least because of the C-Handle provision: flight control by C/B-risers ...

  • Efficiency in every respect

IOTA 2 shows its high level of efficiency not only when gliding through bumpy air. Its pitch and directional stability also benefits the pilot when thermalling. The canopy stays in the centre of rising air almost as if by itself – without requiring large corrections. Brake line inputs are directly and precisely answered; response is smooth, progressive and logical over the whole control range. This not only saves energy, but makes thermal flying particularly straightforward.

  • State-of-the-art all round

The IOTA 2 merges SIGMA 10 development performance-enhancing technologies with B-Class safety requirements. The Performance-Intermediate boasts a state-of-the-art profile, and perfectly distributed canopy tensioning to go with it. Mini-Ribs, C-Wires, double-3D Diamond-Shaping and Sliced Diagonals are further ingredients of this hi-tec cocktail.

  • The climb rate is exceptional. It was really good in both light and strong lift.

    Nancy Elliott, Flybubble

  • The wing is light to control, gives frank feedback, inclines immediately and has visibly very good output across the whole speed range.

    Philippe Lami, Free.aero

  • Very competitive with the high B's, very good climb, easy for a high B.

    Ziad Bassil, Facebook

  • This glider is oriented to cross country with comfort, but high performance.

Technology & Features

    • Double 3D-Diamond Shaping

A diagonal perspective in the two-fold 3D shaping computations works to counteract seam-gathering (ruching) and the effects of the vertical forces across the profile. This achieves an even smoother canopy surface at the leading edge.

    • Invisible Essentials

In the IOTA 2 the invisible performance factors – such as profile and canopy tension distribution – have been radically reengineered. Higher levels of pitch and directional stability result.

      Pitch Control Handles

The IOTA 2 introduces so-called C-Handles on an IOTA’s risers. This allows the accelerated glider to be actively controlled and steered by C and B levels instead of by speedbar and weight shift.

Perfect weight range choice and optimally tuned for weight with a proper small size

The IOTA 2 size selection was thought of as having Seamless Weight Ranges between 10 and 15 kg steps. Every pilot’s flying weight will find itself within only one ideal takeoff weight range, because these ranges extend seamlessly through the glider sizes, but do not overlap. These IOTA 2 ideal takeoff weight areas provide the optimal relationship between gliding speed and climb performance for each size in all normal flying conditions, and also take into account the different paraglider size characteristics.

For the first time a IOTA comes out in five sizes, with a proper small size. What we mean is that the IOTA 2/21 size, 60 - 77 kg takeoff weight range, is not just a scaled down version, but has materials and design features adapted for a small paraglider.

FAQ

fold faq

What sort of pilot does the IOTA 2 need?

The Performance-Intermediate is suitable for experienced thermaling pilots who have at least made their first cross country attempts, and have the degree of feeling for a paraglider’s behaviour in flight that is required for a high-end EN/LTF-B wing. The IOTA 2’s considerable performance potential can only be fully used if its pilot has acquired a comprehensive active flying style, recognises the onset of possible canopy disturbances and knows how to react appropriately. Of course, competence in normal fast descent techniques is assumed for a high-end EN/LTF-B wing.

fold faq

Where does the IOTA 2 fit among ADVANCE wings?

In accordance with pilot aspirations IOTA 2 comes mid way between Basic-Intermediate EPSILON 8 and the EN-C SIGMA 10 Sportster. This means that the tenth SIGMA generation has moved up again to the middle of the EN-C class, instead of suiting lower C pilots, leaving more upper space for the IOTA 2 within the ADVANCE range of models.

fold faq

What are the differences from the original IOTA?

Although it looks virtually the same as the first IOTA (identical outline and aspect ratio), the IOTA 2 is in fact a completely new design. The profile and wing tensioning have been radically revised. This results in particularly high pitch and directional stability, which makes the IOTA 2 clearly more comfortable to fly in active air, while retaining its high glide performance.

The IOTA 2 also has Mini-Ribs at the trailing edge and C-Wires inside the canopy. Double transformation 3D-Diamond-Shaping produces an even smoother wing surface at the flow-critical leading edge.

IOTA 2 risers have been given Pitch-Control-Handles (C-Handles). These make it easier to actively control the wing while accelerated in bumpy air. New also are the Seamless Weight Ranges over five sizes, instead of the previous four, wider-spaced choices.

fold faq

I am not a professional. What is the use of these so-called C-Handles for me?

C-Handles originally came from 2-liner competition wings, but have long since found their way into D and C three liners. You now meet them on B wings. They simplify active control and steering while accelerated. Instead of controlling pitch by speedbar, and steering by weight shift the IOTA 2 C-Handles can be used to do these things. Handling is also more direct by C-Handle.

Note, however, that efficient and instinctive control by C-Handles needs practice and experience. Large and abrupt inputs risk stalling!

fold faq

Which IOTA 2 size should I choose?

If you fly in the normal variety of conditions just choose the size in whose Seamless Weight Range your all-up weight occurs. This is an easy choice.

fold faq

Can I fly the IOTA 2 outside the Seamless Weight Ranges?

Absolutely! The certified weight ranges are wider than the Seamless Weight Ranges – in other words they overlap. The ideal (Seamless) ranges were introduced to simplify the choice of correct size for a pilot. These weight ranges run seamlessly through the sizes. Your flying weight only occurs in one size. That is the size for you. Flying at the upper or lower ends of the certified weight ranges (outside the seamless area) affects the flying behaviour and handling of a wing, without influencing your safety. Glide ratio remains the same over a glider’s weight range, but climb performance will be altered.

fold faq

What should I observe when packing the IOTA 2?

We recommend laying nose rib on nose rib, so that the leading edge wires lie as flat as possible, one on the next and all at the same height. The C-Wires will then lie at the same level. Fold the wing to the width of the inner bag and continue as follows (see pic.): first fold the trailing edge in behind the Mini-Ribs, then the leading edge below the Leading-Edge-Wires. Finally fold the leading edge package over the lower side. Link: Picture
