At the first Bordairline competition this season in Alt Aussee Chrigel Maurer stormed ahead in his familiar style – together with passenger Ernst Ammering: of the 51 pilots who started they covered the greatest distance; and back. The two spent 33 hours on the journey and covered 140km out-and-return, with an impressive 105 of them in the air – under the BIBETA 5.
At first the weather on the 18th of May looked less than promising: there was half a metre of new snow on the ground at 1500 m; and a takeoff below this height was out of the question in that all around are woods. So the Tandem Team had to try a takeoff in winter conditions: wind from the back and snow. But the BIBETA 5 proved itself to be the promised reliable partner: its splendid takeoff qualities came into play, and pilot and passenger rose effortlessly into the sky.
The weather got better during the flight, Chrigel circled up and the hunt for kilometres was on. “The BIBETA 5 glides very well and the wing stayed solid at full speed”, said Chrigel. He enjoys being able to share the difficult as well as the good moments. “If I’m flying with a passenger I have to be always sure that I can find safe landing and takeoff places – the demands and learning curve are much steeper when there are two of you!”
Chrigel will be taking off with the tandem at the next Bordairline event.
