High-level Soaring

A superlative soaring session waited for ADVANCE test pilots Chrigel Maurer and Greg Blondeau when they set off for the Jungfraujoch shortly after the weekly team meeting.

In January, ADVANCE test pilots Chrigel and Greg, along with Max Mittmann, managed to have a fantastic flight.

Chrigel had checked out the weather forecast and it looked as if the Jungfrau itself would be good for soaring. He was right: these three pilots with their ADVANCE wings – Chrigel and Greg on OMEGA 9 prototypes and Max with the SIGMA 8 – went up there and proceeded to soar for more than two and a half hours above the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

While takeoff conditions on the Jungfraujoch were a bit turbulent, once above 4500m asl it was cold and smooth. “The wind was never too strong and generally everything was going up – I think the conditions were more or less standing wave”, Greg wrote about the impressive flight. “The wind speed in the compression zone over the ridge was about 35-40 km/h and 20 km/h close to the ridge – climbing everywhere! No turbulence, it was smoother than an evening soaring session on the coast....“.

300 metres above the Jungfrau peak the three ADVANCE pilots had an exceptional view of the Alps... The picture gives an impression of the rare moments which Chrigel, Greg and Max could enjoy up there...
