Fabric porosity measurement

The limit values during the porosity measurements are to a large extent dependent on the methods employed as well as the test instruments. Consequently, the absolute values are not very meaningful. ADVANCE uses a Kretschmer porosity dial gauge. The following limit values have been defined for our paragliders when using this measurement instrument:

very good:

> 1200

good:

> 300

worn:

> 100

heavily worn:

> 70

Test of the fabric tear strength

Instrument:

Bettsometer (B.M.A.A. aproved Patent No.GB 2270768 Clive Betts Sales)

Method:

A pin-size hole is made in the upper surface in the area of the leading edge and the tear strength of the fabric tested.

Limit value:

At 600 g load, the tear length is set at < 5 mm.

Test of the line strength

Limit values:

Method:

Method: One line is removed from the A and B levels of each upper cascade and tested. If the measured line strength is less than 50% of the respective nominal strength, the test is to be repeated on another line. The lower of the two values represents the actual line strength. This must not be less than the required minimum strength for the line concerned. If both tested lines fail to reach the minimum strength, all lines in the upper cascade and level concerned must be replaced. If only one of the two lines fails to achieve the required minimum strength, a third line from the same upper cascade and level is tested. If this is above the required minimum strength, all lines of the same type (diameter/material) in the upper cascade and level concerned are replaced. Otherwise every single line of the upper cascade and level concerned is replaced
