Chrigel Maurer wins the VercoFly

08.09.10 | Chrigel has won the VercoFly Hike & Fly competition in Unterwallis, Switzerland. Superb organisation, well thought out rules and weather to dream about made this an event to inspire – Chrigel included.

This year the very imaginative concept of the VercoFly was run for the second time. Vercorin in Unterwallis served as the start of the four day competition. 8 Swiss Alpine Club huts in the Val d’Anniviers and Val d’Hérens were set as the places to be reached by paraglider or on foot. The 28 athletes on the start line battled for the 1000 points for each hut visited. There were additional points for eating a blackberry flan from the Hotel Weisshorn - as well for anyone who could get a kiss out of the Cabane Becs de Bosson hutkeeper. From 8pm to 7am the nights had to be spent in one of the huts, otherwise it would hail penalty points.

On the Friday morning Chrigel decided to first make for the Val d’Anniviers. With sensational flying conditions he had already bagged 5 huts by the end of day one and enjoyed the blackberry flan over Zinal; so could tick the Val d’Anniviers box. A cloudbase rising to 4260 m meant that all four days could be flown and hiked in splendid style. Each day additional points for the longest flights and the highest altitudes were variously awarded to Chrigel and second placed Alexandre Barman. Our sincere congratulations go to the organisers of this successful event, all the participants for their sportsmanlike performances and Chrigel for his well-deserved victory.
