X-Alps Update: Some proper flying at last!
22.07.11 | Chrigel dominates the X-Alps with a big lead, and has reached Switzerland. The 3S strategy is working well! Hugh Miller wonders about Chrigel’s glider.
Supreme – safe – schnell (fast). This is exactly what strikes you when you watch Chrigel Maurer and Thomas Theurillat on the television. Everything goes to plan, even when fate is not kind to Team SUI1. Yesterday, together with Thomas and a cameraman, Chrigel climbed over a glacier in a storm and heavy snow, up to a hut, there to spend the night at over 3000 m. We are sure to get to see this soon in a Red Bull video clip. Today Thomas Theurillat told us on the phone that at last the team can make the most of some proper flying! Chrigel’s huge lead has made this clear, and Thomas reports that he has not been able to catch up with him in the car yet...
Hugh Miller, reporting on the X-Alps, is impressed by Chrigel’s glider and wonders whether it really is only a modified version of the 2009X-Alps OMEGA. Hugh, we can reassure you that this is true. (Perhaps the helicopter perspex distorted the picture somewhat and the wing looked stretched ;-). The decision to take a well-proven concept for specially dealing with difficult weather conditions has fully paid off.
Incidentally, there are two other ADVANCE LIGHTNESS pilots going strongly in the X-Alps, and catching up too - Martin Müller and Heli Eichholzer.
Team ADVANCE are delighted to welcome Chrigel and Thomas to Switzerland. Good luck the rest of the way!
