SIGMA 8 flies well in Spain
10.07.12 | David Smart wins the sport class in the British Paragliding Championships and also comes 3rd in serial class on his ADVANCE SIGMA 8 after the second round of the Brits held in Pedro Bernardo.
The weather for this leg was good with 5 great tasks, often ending in an exciting fast glide into goal from 15km out. Power lines near the goal cylinder made it even more interesting. For those landing back down the course line there were the bulls to think about, with one competitor making a hasty exit over a wall chased by horns - only to find his pursuer diving through a hole further down the fence.
The prevailing westerly wind meant crosswind legs were difficult, and in task 2 many ended up in a position with a really difficult 10km push into a strong headwind that put many people down. Climb selection, speed bar and perseverance were the order of the day here, and the SIGMA speed to fly indicator (SPI) was a really good in-your-face reminder of how fast you should really be pushing in these conditions. If making this turn point wasn’t difficult enough, the high cirrus then came in and only a few competitors made goal.
All in all it was just a great venue, great town and great competition.
