ADVANCE competition participation in 2010

14.12.09 | ADVANCE has decided to restrict the competition team to its company and test pilots because of the uncertain way competition sport is developing.

As sometimes in the past, ADVANCE will concentrate its competition involvement in the coming 2010 season with a small team of company pilots. We consider it necessary for us to take this step because the direction of development momentum in competition is very unclear and difficult to assess. Experience of paragliding so far now raises the question of whether we have, today, reached a juncture where a new class of flying machine with rigid parts will emerge. Basically we consider all kinds of progress and new technology in paraglider sport to be positive factors. However, as things are today, not enough is known about the risks and extreme flight behaviour of paragliders with rigid primary structures. Therefore we cannot and will not take responsibility for the situation in which these new developments in competition would place our team pilots.

This position does not mean that we will not be keenly following and testing new developments, but this will be exclusively with our own company pilots. We regret these steps, not only because ADVANCE have dominated the competition scene very successfully in years gone by (4 World Cup victories in a row 2005 to 2008, World Champion 2005 and 2009, European Champion 2006, X-Alps winner 2009, to mention only the most important), but, above all, because we will not be able to equip our team pilots, of many years’ standing, with competition wings in the next season.

This decision has, however, no effect on the development of our high-end serial high performance OMEGA 8 - to be launched on the market in Spring 2010. This glider will incorporate the experience gained in our World Champion titles and X-Alps win from 2009, and will appeal to the demanding, performance-orientated cross country pilot or serial competitor. With this glider we will again put together a worldwide serial team, and also, once again, be providing increased support for cross country flying.
